What is Sustainability?
‘Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’. (Brundtland Commission 1987)
Sustainability (also referred to as sustainable development) will be a key driver in shaping how we live and work in the 21st century. In a globalised world, the challenges of climate change, population growth, loss of biodiversity, poverty levels, and the competition for - and pricing of - finite resources, require immediate action if our society is to thrive and prosper.
A sustainable community is one which provides for an improved quality of life, protected and healthy ecosystems, social wellbeing and cohesion, and economic equity.
The international community, governments, companies and non-government organisations are all seeking new ways ‘to develop and support sustainable social, economic and environmental outcomes in business, industry and the community’. Green Skills Agreement.
