Research centres
Extensive research on social, economic and environmental sustainability is being undertaken by universities can be directly linked to student and community learning and change. These include:

- students undertaking research projects across a wide range of community groups

The Australian Centre for Sustainable Catchments (ACSC) focuses on and underpins the profitability and sustainability of water and catchment management in Australia. The Centre has established a 20 year research program so that, by 2025, Queensland has a thriving regional economy based on world-leading practices in regional water and catchment management, including the most efficient and sustainable stewardship of our natural resources.
This initiative involves a number of people involved in teaching sustainability meeting as a community of practice to share sustainability practice, discuss related issues and promote sustainability learning and teaching.

Sustainability Policy is also developing as a recognised profession and a multidisciplinary research field in its own right. The Environmental Services section in Facilities Management offers support and advice on sustainability issues and coordinates environmental projects and programs. Facilities Management (FM) aims to reduce the environmental impact of University operations by conserving water and energy, reducing pollution and waste and promoting ecologically sustainable building design and operations. Facilities management has formed a Sustainability Operations Action and Policy group to address these issues.
