Professional development

Developing the skills and capacity of professional staff in learning and teaching for sustainability is critical to achieving curriculum change, at both disciplinary and interdisciplinary levels, and to institutional reform. Initiatives underway include: a range of resource sites for staff; workshops on educating for sustainability; accredited courses for university staff; the use of sustainability ambassadors; self-teaching guides; and ways of using the university and its workplaces as a living laboratory.

CSU Sustainability Grant : Charles Sturt University

In 2009 and 2010 applications from University staff members were invited for projects, up to a maximum value of $15,000, to further the sustainability values and commitments of the University. Approximately $100,000 was available in each year.

The site identifies, recognizes and facilitates delivery of endorsed professional development for sustainability/environmental education practitioners. There are workshops available for professional development. The workshops are facilitated by leaders in field of Educating for Sustainability. They follow action learning principles, provide opportunities for networking, and are inclusive of individual participant learning styles. Certificates endorsed by Australia’s peak environmental education organisations are issued to participants upon successful completion of the recognised modules.

Photovolatic Devices and Applications : The University of New South Wales

The School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering and the ARC Photovoltaics Centre of Excellence are currently offering to the public the online course Photovoltaic Devices and Applications. The course has been designed for professional engineers, or others with a similar educational background, wishing to develop expertise in the field. This 12 - 16 week on-line course is now available either in an engineering strand for professional engineers or in a essay based ‘minimal mathematics’ strand for professional architects and related occupations.

Sustaining academic life : a case for applying principles of social sustainability to the academic profession : Emerald

This paper aims to examine the social sustainability of academic work in Australian tertiary institutions, in addition to offering a summary of recent research on social sustainability with a particular emphasis on Barron and Gauntlett’s work. Barron and Gauntlett’s principles of social sustainability are used as a lens to investigate some of the current conditions of the academic profession. It appears that Australian universities often fail to perform in a way that complies with the principles of social sustainability. This paper identifies examples in the literature of conditions which inhibit academic staff’s ability to work in socially sustainable ways.
