Effective institutional change requires institutional policies and action plans on sustainability and approaches to education for sustainability. This requires the alignment of policies, planning, administration and resources to give direct focus to supporting sustainability initiatives. It may include targeted strategic funding, the establishment of research institutes, leadership groups, accountability mechanisms for the delivery of curriculum initiatives in work plans and performance indicators of key staff. 2008: Are Employers Seeking Sustainability Literate Graduates? (Sayce, Kingston) : Higher Education Academy (UK)

This study, conducted by Kingston University and led by Professor Sarah Sayce, explored how far sustainability criteria have been adopted as part of the graduate recruitment process of multidisciplinary built environment (BE) organisations in the private sector who recruit BE graduates, particularly those in surveying.

2008: Developing Participative ESD to Enhance the Links between Sustainability Literacy, Sustainability Competencies and Employability (Grant, UWE) : Higher Education Academy (UK)

The aim of this project was to explore the productive alignment of academic- and work-related sustainability literacy and competencies to enhance student employability. This study raised some fundamental questions for everyone involved. Sustainable development and ESD are not the easiest of issues for people to engage with and there are a number of potentially conflicting and confusing agendas.

2008: Improving Student Awareness of SD and Related Employability Issues through Embedded Course Content (Gordon, Hull) : Higher Education Academy (UK)

This project aimed to assess the impact that embedding sustainable development (SD) into the curriculum had on students’ awareness of both sustainability and environmental issues and how this related to their future employability. The project compared approaches taken in both Computer Science modules and in Career Management Skills modules provided by the University of Hull Careers Service for undergraduate and postgraduate students across the institution. The outcomes of the project will be used to inform approaches to embedding sustainability skills within the curriculum.

Enhancing the Way Students Learn About Sustainability : Director of Learning and Teaching Centre Macquarie University

Sustainability is one of the guiding principles underpinning Macquarie’s graduate capabilities framework. Embedding sustainability as a graduate capability is a complex task that requires multiple approaches. This project aims to develop resources and participation opportunities to embed the principle of sustainability and associated graduate capabilities in the curriculum.

The outcomes of the project will  include the development and dissemination of web-based resources, including:

  • engaging 5-6 minute video case studies that showcase sustainable teaching and learning strategies at Macquarie;
  • a targeted annotated bibliography of scholarly research on sustainable education; and
  • two ‘how to’ handouts on learning outcomes and assessment tasks to promote sustainability and associated graduate capabilities.

It describes how a survey instrument collected data on environmental programs, their resourcing and control processes, and the level of community involvement in their development and ongoing management. The data indicates that for the majority of institutions, environmental management cannot be considered a mainstream business activity.
