A number of universities now have a sustainability website. A range of examples and options are featured. Depending upon the institution these sites include:

  • institutional vision, policy and strategic planning for sustainability
  • options for addressing social, economic and environmental sustainability in the curriculum
  • research, and
  • ‘greening the campus’ initiatives.

Achieving a Sustainable Campus : The University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne has the long term commitment and goal of being carbon neutral by 2030. Targets have been set to achieve this goal, through dedicated staff, planning and innovative strategies. Property and Campus Services has formed a working group to address this. In addition to reducing our carbon levels the University has set targets for the conservation of water and electricity, as well as waste minimisation and promoting sustainable design in new buildings. The first Five Star "Green Star" rating is to be achieved in the Economics and Commerce Building. The sustainable design principles will also be placed in refurbished buildings.

The University of Melbourne is committed to achieving an environmentally sustainable campus by: Reducing our carbon footprint, rigorously managing the environmental impact of operations and Encouraging the whole University community to think, talk and act on environmental sustainability issues. Other environmental sustainability teaching, learning & knowledge transfer activities of the University include: Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute, Office for Environmental Programs, Climate Change Research Group.     

ANU Green - Sustainability Office: Outreach and education for sustainability : The Australian National University

ANUgreen is the ANU's award winning environmental management program, run by the Facilities and Services Division. Program staff work to reduce the University's environmental impact by implementing the University's environmental management plan (which is overseen by the Environmental Management Planning Committee) and other University environmental management commitments.

The CSU Green office serves as a hub of communication and coordination for the University's sustainability efforts. The Ecoversity Office at the University of Adelaide works on a range of sustainable projects and programs, focusing on awareness and promotion, footprint reduction, and ongoing management.

Environmental Sustainability: Energy Audit of University : University of South Australia

Staff and students completed a detailed energy audit of the University 5 campuses. The results were used in developing a University sustainability plan which was incorporated in the ATN universities carbon reduction plan and targets

Greening the Library : Charles Sturt University

In July 2008 the Sustainability Working Party (SWP) was established by the Division of Library Services (DLS). The mission for this group is to determine strategies that DLS can engage in, which will assist the University to achieve its sustainability targets as set out in the Institutional Development Plan.

Queensland Department of Environment & Resource Management (DERM) : Queensland University of Technology

In partnership with the Queensland Department of Environment & Resource Management (DERM), QUT is contributing to the beverage container recovery targets set by the Packaging Stewardship Forum of the Australian Food and Grocery Council. By providing education and infrastructure, the program aims to reduce the 1,500 tonnes of landfill waste generated by QUT students & staff annually.
