What are green skills?

‘Skills for sustainability, also known as green skills, are the technical skills, knowledge values and attitudes needed in the workplace to develop and support sustainable social, economic and environmental outcomes in business, industry and the community.’

Green Skills Agreement

Mapping current initiatives and sharing best practice are important steps in achieving the objectives of the Government’s Green Skills Agreement. The Agreement aims to ensure skills for sustainability are an integral part of all vocational education and training and are relevant to the current and future needs of industry. The Green Skills Agreement Implementation Group has identified the key role universities have in producing graduates who will ensure these objectives are realised.

Origins of this website

In 2010, the Australian Learning and Teaching Council Limited (ALTC), in partnership with the University of Western Sydney, was commissioned by the Australian Government to develop a comprehensive framework within which to locate the wide variety of ways in which key issues of social, economic and environmental sustainability are being addressed in the curriculum of Australia’s universities and higher education institutions.

This website provides a single repository outlining the full range of ways in which universities are responding to the Green Skills agenda. Information is provided on:

  • Relevant higher education courses that include sustainability content.
  • Examples of effective professional development and other collaborative activities that build the capacity of academics to deliver these courses.
  • Development and implementation of delivery of programmes and embedding sustainability principles institutionally

The ALTC closed in September 2011.  At that time, responsibility for management and development of the site was transferred to the University of Technology, Sydney.
